African Methodist Episcopal Church We Are
Our Brother's Keeper
Hurricane Ike assaulted the Texas coast on the morning of Saturday, September 13, 2008. The Texas Conference was hardest hit in the areas of Galveston (where Ike made landfall) and Houston. By God’s Amazing Grace none of our membership lost their lives, as many had evacuated inland. However, there was a tremendous loss and much damage to property both individually and to many of our churches (we all probably now have a much deeper appreciation for what the 8th District had experienced with Hurricane Katrina). Many of the evacuees came to shelters in the cities of Austin and San Antonio, in the Southwest Conference. The 10th District’s Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) and the Southwest Conference WMS sprang into action to respond to the needs of those in shelters, as well as those who stayed and rode out the storm in the Houston area. They did enormous work – feeding, helping to take people to do their laundry shop and worship, as well as distributing gift cards to help individuals go shop for basic necessities. The 10th District Lay, looking for ways to provide support to people in need during this calamity, secured and distributed $1,675.00 in gift cards. Bishop Ingram, thought it not robbery to take time to come and see about his flock. He is pictured visiting members at a shelter in Austin.
